Yemoja is often referred to as "the mother of all Orishas" She is dicpicted as a mermaid, and is associated with the moon,
water, and feminine mysteries. She is the protector of women. She
governs everything pertaining to women; childbirth, conception,
parenting, child safety, love, and healing. She oversees deep secrets,
ancient wisdom, the moon, sea shells, and the collective unconscious. She is the major water deity from the Yoruba religion
In some accounts it is said that she married Agayu and they had one son, Orungan, and fifteen Orishas while other accounts describe her as the creator goddess. Her name is a contraction of Yoruba words,”Yeye emo eja” which means “Mother whose children are like fishes.”
Her followers all wear necklaces of seven blue beads and seven clear crystals alternating
