Yaa Asantewaa is often compared the African Joan of Arc, her heroism continue to inspire Ghanaians and the rest of Africa long after she's gone.
Politician, war strategist, and political activist, women like her were rare in her time. In 1900, at a time when the men of Ashanti kingdom were dispirited, she led a rebellion against the British to defend the Golden Stool, a stool which had stood for centuries as the symbol of royalty
The rebellion was eventually quelled by British forces and she was exiled to Seychelles
YAA ASANTEWAA reminds us not to be cowards in the face of oppression
