KING JaJa OF Opobo.
King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most prominent figures in Nigerian history. His real name was Jubo Jubogha (1821-1891) and he was a merchant prince who founded the city of Opobo, now in Rivers State.
He got the nickname Jaja because of his dealings with the British. At the age of 12, he was sold into slavery at Bonny, now also in Rivers State. But being an intelligent chap that he was, he soon earned his way out of slavery and eventually rose to become a leader of the people. He ruled well but a war later broke out, he was deceived by the British that he was to go and negotiate with the Queen of England but instead, he was sent on exile to Saint Vincent in the Caribbean.
When he was eventually allowed to return in 1891, he died on his way back. He was allegedly given a cup of poisoned tea. He was buried on the Canary Islands but the outcry of his people meant that he was quickly exhumed and reburied at home where he was mourned for two years and a ceremony was done to celebrate him as a deity.
